About Us
Querencia Stables offers a fresh approach to hunter jumper training and instruction for all levels of riders, and full service boarding for our equine partners. We have high-quality ponies and horses available for lease, for riders that are looking for a horse ownership experience without a purchase commitment.
Gwen Barnes has worked to ride for over 30 years. In that time she has had the opportunity to work and ride with some of the top riders of the sport, including the late Steve Hummel of Texas, Hugh Graham of Canada and Guillermo Obligado of Argentina/California.
From these and many more experiences of working in the field, she has derived a strong and passionate approach to coaching riders and training horses. Coupled with BA and MA in Counseling Psychology, she is exceptionally passionate about coaching and training the "whole" rider/horse team for long term success in sport and life.
The word Querencia is representative of her outlook on the role of her relationship with horses and the sport which she hopes to continue to share with many others.

Querencia is a metaphysical concept in the Spanish language. The term comes from the Spanish verb "querer," which means "to desire." Querencia describes a place where one feels safe, a place from which one's strength of character is drawn, a place where one feels at home.
In bullfighting, a bull may stake out his querencia, a certain part of the bull ring where he feels strong and safe. Ernest Hemingway's 1932 nonfiction book Death in the Afternoon, describes the querencia in this context:
A querencia is a place the bull naturally wants to go to in the ring, a preferred locality... It is a place which develops in the course of the fight where the bull makes his home. It does not usually show at once, but develops in his brain as the fight goes on. In this place he feels that he has his back against the wall and in his querencia he is inestimably more dangerous and almost impossible to kill.
